Early 18th-Century American Indian Content.
With Carolina and New England, New York Maps by Herman Moll.
An important work covering the roles of Christian missionaries in 18th-century Colonial America, by David Humphreys, printed in London in 1730.
Chapter XI is headed "Attempts to Convert the Iroquois Indians," which summarizes the history of various North American tribes, in New York, also the Indians in New England, "swept away, by a grievous Mortality," as well as those bordering on North and South Carolina. The latter part of the chapter points to "new hopes" in converting Indians, reporting on the visit of Four Iroquois sachems who came to England.
The present work contains accounts of the Yamasee and Tuscaraora wars in the Carolinas, the New York slave insurections of 1712, the Four Indian Kings how traveled to England, and a 1715, New York edition of a Mohawk prayer book - Siebert.
The work includes two important and scarce maps by Herman Moll:
- A Map of the Province of Carolina Divided into its Parishes &c. According to the latest Accounts. 1730.
- A Map of New England, New York, New Jersey and Pensilvania By H. Moll Geographer. Note. The Towns to which Missionaries are sent are marked thus [church symbol] 1730.
