A Glorious View of Vienna

The engraving presents a decorative view of Vienna from the west, extending from the Kahlen and Leopoldsberg on the left to the Karlskirche and the Imperial Favorita (Theresianum) on the right.

The mid-18th century was a transformative period for Vienna, marked by its emergence as a cultural and political hub within the Habsburg Empire. The city was renowned for its baroque architecture, bustling marketplaces, and grandiose public buildings. This view captures Vienna during the reign of Empress Maria Theresa, whose extensive urban reforms and patronage of the arts significantly shaped the city's landscape.

The sky features a ribbon banner with the title, and on either side are large coats of arms: the Imperial coat of arms on the left and the Vienna city coat of arms on the right. The detailed legend at the bottom provides a comprehensive index of 47 of the city's notable sites, including churches, monasteries, public buildings, and fortifications.

Key landmarks include:

  • St. Stephen's Cathedral: Dominating the skyline with its tall spire, this iconic Gothic structure is a focal point of the map.
  • Imperial Palace (Hofburg): The sprawling complex reflects the political heart of the Habsburg monarchy.
  • Karlskirche: A prominent example of baroque architecture, commissioned by Emperor Charles VI.
  • Various Monasteries and Churches: Including the Franciscan Monastery, St. Michael's Church, and the Jesuit Church, highlighting Vienna's religious and architectural diversity.
