Description

Rare plan showing the Rebel Fortifications at Columbus, Kentucky, on the Mississippi River. Detail includes a town plan, tracks of the Mobile and Ohio R.R., Road to Elliott's Mill and Ft. Holt, Road to Blandville, Clinton Road to Milburn, Paducah & Mayfield, Belmont, Capstan used to stretch chain across the Mississippi River and othe notes. A key addresses Battery positions, Caponieres,, Loop, Magazines and the Railroad embankment prepared for Infantry defense. Hand written date of 1867, although Stephens lists the map as 1862 (Stephens 216.95; 217). Apparently rare. The published edition is attributed to Bien, but there is no imprint on this example. A nice unfolded example, laid on original linen and likely removed from some sort of composite atlas. In all, a nice example of this rare Civil War Battle Plan. No example appears in catalogue or auction records in the past 25 years.
