Description

This 1976 advertising map of Santa Fe, New Mexico, combines a directory of local businesses with a stylized street map of the downtown area. This is half of the original sheet.

The map prominently highlights major streets such as Marcy Street, Palace Avenue, Water Street, and San Francisco Street, as well as key landmarks like the Plaza, St. Francis Cathedral, and the New Mexico State Capitol. Businesses and attractions are labeled directly on the map, with some illustrated icons and advertisements interspersed to add visual interest. These include representations of historical and cultural motifs, such as wagons, cowboys, and Native American dancers, reinforcing Santa Fe’s identity as a cultural and historical hub.

The reverse side of the map features a detailed directory organized by category, such as restaurants, galleries, antique shops, clothing stores, and more. It includes addresses and phone numbers for each listing, serving as a comprehensive resource for locals and tourists. The map is also peppered with advertisements for businesses like delis, trading posts, and boutiques, reflecting the artistic and artisan-focused culture of Santa Fe.
