A Gold Rush Era Wall Map of North America
This is a remarkably well preserved example of this extremely rare wall map of North America, published in New York City in 1853.
The map was issued at a time when the regions west of the Mississippi River were dominated by large territories, including Washington Territory and Oregon Territory, extending to the Rocky Mountains, Utah Territory and New Mexico Territory, pre-dating the creation of Nevada, Arizona and Colorado, a massive and strangely configured Indian Territory and massive "North West Territory", pre-dating the creation of Nebraska Territory and later Dakota Territory. The map also shows an oversized Minnesota Territory.
Published during the period where the Gold Rush was still dominating national news, the map includes an inset plan of San Francisco and large image of Sutter's Fort, along with sailing ships and steamships illustrating the sea route to San Francisco.
Rarity
The map is very rare.
This is the first example we have ever seen.
