Description

Nice example of Major Rennell's map of the northern half of Africa. The map first appeared in Mungo Park's Travels in the Interior Part of Africa… This example, which has been dissected and laid on linen, would appear to be from the first French edition, issued in 1799. The work is considered one the most important books dealing with the exploration of the interior of Africa. Mungo Park, a young Scottish doctor, made his first journey in 1795, in search of the Niger. He spent two years travelling deep into the interior of Africa and his book provides a fine and vivid narrative of his adventures and his coming to grips with native civiliations and customs. The journey was sponsored by the African Association in the hope of solving the the riddle of the Niger, no doubt enthused by Bruce's success on the other side of the continent. Park set out from the Gambia, marched east to Bambuk, crossing the Faleme and the Senegal, and on the July 20, 1796, he reached the Niger. Unfortunately, he did not survive the journey, as he was subsequently killed by natives east of Timbouctou. A nice example of this important map.
