Description

Propagandistic large-format World War II "Newsmap", providing up-to-date coverage to American servicemen, while tending to downplay Axis gains. On the verso, a woman stands by four lucky horseshoes hanging in front of a Blue Star Service Flag.

The series changed format in the later years of the war, from displaying one world map, with half of the sheet taken up by text and smaller inset maps and images, to a less text-heavy composition dominated by a few maps highlighting battle areas. Here, the main focus is Borneo, shown in both resource and elevation maps, the latter with dates of Allied landings. Borneo is also superimposed on a map of the United States, emphasizing the size of the island, the third-largest in the world.

This series was first published on April 27, 1942, by the Orientation Course Section. The course distributed the maps to company-sized units of the Army, libraries, and Service clubs, and the army in turn distributed them to other branches of the military. Newsmaps were edited in New York, initially under the Special Service Division and then the Morale Services Division after its establishment, and except for overseas editions, printed in Chicago.
