Description

This double-hemisphere world map, published in the late 18th century, highlights the explorations and discoveries made by Captain James Cook and other prominent navigators of the period, namely George Anson. The map is adorned with decorative cartouches and floral motifs. It features detailed outlines of continents, islands, and maritime routes, with specific annotations marking significant discoveries and geographic features. The map is further distinguished by its inclusion of both the North and South Poles, with inset maps showing the northernmost and southernmost reaches of the globe.

Australia is shown with Van Diemen's Land still attached to Australia, prior to the discovery of the Bass Strait in 1797, by George Bass and Matthew Flinders. Cook's passage between the islands of New Zealand and the complete coastline of New Zealand reflects the reports from Cook's Voyages.

This map is a prime example of 18th-century cartography, combining scientific precision with artistic embellishment.
