Description

This map covers the Gulf of Mexico, the Caribbean Sea, and the surrounding territories of North and Central America, as well as the islands of the West Indies.

The map delineates East Florida and West Florida as distinct entities, reflecting the administrative divisions of Spanish-controlled Florida during this period. These divisions were remnants of British control following the Treaty of Paris in 1763, which ceded Florida to Britain. Spain regained Florida in 1783, dividing it into East and West Florida as separate provinces. This distinction became particularly contentious during the early 19th century, as the United States sought to assert its influence over these territories, leading eventually to the Adams-Onís Treaty of 1819.

The map shows the "New Bahama Channel or Gulf of Florida," with nice details in "Bahama or Lucayos Islands."
