Description

Rare map of North America, showing California as an island, from Baeck's Atlas geographicus…, which mentions Hubert Jalliot in the title credits. Phillips 555. The map includes a relatively unique looking California on the second Sanson model and the Mississippi pushed far to the west of its true course, with its headwaters mistakenly shown as being the same as the Rio Grande. The projection of Florida is also quite odd. The map shows Columbus' Route to and from the West Indies. The map is similar appearance to McLaughlin 150 (Ogier's map of the same title), but includes much more striking engraving style and cartouche and the more embellishment. Both maps are in turn based upon De La Feuille's 1702 map (McLaughlin 147), which in turn find their cartographic routes in the large format maps of Coronelli, published in the 1690s. In all, a striking example of a rare map of California. McLaughlin 174.
