A Ruth Taylor White Rarity  . . . Voluntarily and Not by Conquest or Purchase

Rare example of Ruth Taylor White's map of the the Big Island of Hawaii, here repurposed as the cover map for a larger map of the Hilo, intended for soldiers stationed on the Big Island of Hawaii.

Ruth Taylor White's pictorial maps are among the most decorative and sought after, with her series of maps of the Hawaiian Islands being among her most famous works.  However, this map, which was produced for the Big Island USO Club, is virtually unrecorded.

The primary revision is in the title of the map, which notes that  "the Territory of Hawaii. . . became . . . part of the United States of America voluntarily and not by conquest of purchase," is a marvelous bit of persuasion, clearly reflective of its intended audience and the primary mission of defending the the US against Naval threats in the Pacific.

The map on the verso is an excellent early map of Hilo, which was originally prepared for the Works Progress Administration.
