Description

This map, created by Johann Ulrich Muller in 1702 and published in Frankfurt, depicts the territories of the Mughal Empire in the Indian subcontinent. The map highlights three major regions of the empire:

  1. The Kingdom of Agra, featuring Agra as the principal city and residence, along with Delhi (Delli). Agra and Delhi were significant centers of power and culture during the Mughal era.
  2. The Kingdom of Gujarat (Gufuratte), including important cities like Ahmadabad (Amadabat), Cambay (Cambaja), Surat (Suratte), and Diu. This region was known for its trade and commerce, as well as its strategic location along the coast.
  3. The Kingdom of Bengal (Bengala), with its capital city, Bengal (Bens gala). Bengal was a prosperous region, known for its fertile land, agriculture, and flourishing textile industry.

Johann Ulrich Muller's map offers a glimpse into the geography and political divisions within the Mughal Empire during the early 18th century, providing valuable historical context for understanding the dynamics of the Indian subcontinent at the time.
