A table in the upper right notes the possessions of Great Britain, the Netherlands, France, Spain, and Portugal in the area. Byer and Morrell, phantom islands whose existence was fabricated by American explorer Benjamin Morrell in his ghost-written memoir A Narrative of Four Voyages, are northwest of Hawaii.
