Native American Portrait Photograph by Identified Pioneer Kansas Photographer

A nice CDV photograph of a young Native American man, possibly a Kansa or Kickapoo. The man is seated, sporting an eagle feather as headgear, with a blanket wrapped around his legs. The photographer is identified on the verso of the mount: N. F. Ames, Emporia, Kan.

N. F. Ames was active as a photographer in Emporia, Kansas during the late 1870s. Ames's gallery was located at No. 170 Commercial St. in Emporia, which advertised specialties of portraits and landscape work.
