Description

Early Cabinet Card Birdseye View of Idaho Springs, Colorado

An early and rare view of this famous Colorado gold mining town. The photograph, which is unsigned, shows Idaho Springs, in Clear Creek County, Colorado. Mill buildings can be seen near the Colorado and Southern Railroad tracks. Shows many houses and various out buildings. Painted advertisements on fence for Blackwell's Genuine Bull Durham Tobacco and Warner's Safe Rheumatic Cure.

Gold was first discovered in the vicinity of Idaho Springs in early 1859, where Chicago Creek empties into Clear Creek, helping to precipiate the Colorado gold rush. The early placer discoveries were followed by discoveries of gold veins in the rocks of the canyon walls of Clear Creek.

Rarity

Nice 19th century birdseye photographs of Colorado gold mining towns are quite rare in the market.
