Extremely rare 1906 Los Angeles bird's-eye view, showing a snapshot of the city just as it launched on decades of breakneck growth.
The bird's-eye view focuses on Downtown Los Angeles, with street developments trailing off in Hollywood around Plummer Park, in the west, at Manchester Avenue in the south, and at Ramona Gardens in the east. In the distance, the view stretches out to Pasadena, Glendale, and the San Bernardino Mountains behind.
In the view's own words: "This is the latest perspective Map issued of Los Angeles and vicinity. It shows all Street and Railway extensions, and all Plats laid out, to date. By referring carefully to the margin, much valuable information may be gained."
The view was issued as part of promotions for several LA businesses, including the present overprint for German-American Savings Bank of Los Angeles.
The view was drawn by H.R. Lawson and published by A. Humitsch. It was printed by Riley-Moore Co. of Los Angeles.
This view was issued a decade after B.W. Pierce's Los Angeles, California, 1894 bird's-eye and shortly before Francis Lawrence's 1909 view of the city.
Rarity
The view is very rare, this being the first time we have handled it. The view is not in Glen Creason's Los Angeles in Maps.
