Description

An interesting rare German map of the Western US, apparently the western half of a two sheet map of the US. The map shows marvelous detail in Texas, Washington, Oregon (each of which extend to the Rockies) and the Rocky Mountains. Massive Nebraska Territory and ovesized Kansas. Indian Territory's panhandle is truncated and given to Texas. Nice detail in Texas, including Gillespie County, Deutsche Colony, and many roads, towns, forts, etc. Many Indian Tribes located throughout the map. Routes and distances by steamship from Seattle to San Francisco and then on to San Diego shown. The detail in California is exceptional, locating a number of towns which rarely appear, even on American atlas maps, as well as many roads, the early missions, mountains, details in gold country, etc. Excellent detail in the Great American Desert, with several annotations and many places named near Salt Lake, which is also called Neu Jerusalem. Many elevations are shown throughout the map, especially in key passes. In the Northwest, many forts, rapids and other unusual details are shown. Excellent Indian detail throughout. Many roads, stage routes and explorers routes shown, including some with obscure stations rarely named. Insets of San Francisco, the German Colony in Wartburg, TN, New York Harbor, Panama, etc. A rare map, which was apparently added to Heck's Oblong folio atlas after publication to capitalize on the German-US emigration boom in the 1850s.
