Saucy Chief

A fine portrait of Osage Saucy Chief, Osage

Saucy Chief (aka Ga-hi-ge Wa-da-in-ga, or Playful Chief). Saucy Chief (1815-1901?) was purportedly the first Osage chief to express an intention "to walk in the way of the white man" - expressed by him to one of the early Agency superindendents.

A print of this photograph is in the Gilcrease Museum, and though the photographer remains unidentified, it is possibly Thomas M. Concannon.

Rarity

We find only the example at the Gilcrease Museum.

Original photographs of Native Americans are quite rare in the market.

Condition Description

Albumen mounted on card. Some foxing and minor dampstain to the card mount.

This kawaraban shows the portraits of two officers, an American and a Russian, with explanatory text printed around these figures it reflects the interest in these two powerful countries following their arrival in Japan in 1853. It seems likely that the two men depicted are Commodore Matthew C. Perry and Vice-Admiral (later Count) Yevfimy Vasilyevich Putyatin, although neither are named, as both visited Japan during 1853 in an effort to open trade with Japan. The accompanying texts describe the United States and Russia respectively.
