Rare 1889 Portland-published map of Sea View, Washington, on the Pacific Coast just north of the mouth of the Columbia River.
This map sheet features two distinct images. The top image is titled "Sea View Pacific County, Washington," which showcases a detailed layout of a portion of Pacific County, as laid off and recorded by J.L. Stout. The lots measure 50x100 ft, and the streets running east and west have right of way to the low water mark, except for Pine, Alder, and Pacific Streets. First Street and those parallel to it run north and south, while the others run east and west. All streets are 50 ft. wide, except A Street, which is 25 ft. wide, and Chester Street, which is 42 ft. 8 in. wide.
The second image is titled "Map of the West Half Pacific County, of Washington." It was copyrighted in 1889 by A. Anderson & Co., based in Portland, Oregon. This image provides a broader view of the western half of Pacific County, offering context for the Sea View area depicted in the first image. Both images together give a comprehensive understanding of the region's geography, street layout, and land divisions during the late 19th century.
J.L. Stout, a land surveyor, purchased 153 acres of oceanfront property near the mouth of the Columbia River in 1880. He soon began selling lots for vacation cottages, which led to the establishment of Sea View as a popular summer resort. As the area gained prominence, notable figures, such as Senator Henry Winslow Corbett, were attracted to it. In 1892, Senator Corbett built his own vacation home in Sea View, further solidifying the community's reputation as a desirable destination for rest and relaxation. The picturesque landscape and recreational opportunities of Sea View continue to draw visitors to this day.
