Description

Striking view of Milwaukee from Lake Michigan, lithographed by the Milwaukee Lithographing & Engraving Company and published by Ellsbury & Green in 1874.

The view shows the bustling commercial waterfront, with Goodrich Line steamship Sheboygan approaching the channel leading to the port, shipyard and Milwaukee River at the left.

Along the bottom, more than 40 place names are shown, including Temple Emanuel, the Jewish Temple in Milawaukee which was constructed in 1869.

"Ellsbury did not use the bird's-eye view perspective so popular with his contemporaries. Instead, he portrayed his cities as seen from the ground or from a slight elevation and some distance. He filled the foregrounds of these long panoramas with interesting and pictorially effective details" (Reps p.174).
