Description

Very rare original antique map showing the besiegement of the Fort Real in Arraial Velho do Bom Jesus, the center of Portuguese and Spanish resistance to the Dutch conquest of Brazil.

The map shows the battle lines around Fort Real. Other besieging encampments, with cannons, and the nearby river, are all shown. The city was being besieged by the Dutch, which offered one of the major bastions of Portuguese resistance in the Captaincy of Pernambuco. It resisted Dutch attacks until a three-month siege in 1635, when it was finally destroyed and razed.

This work was published in Leiden around the middle of the 17th century by Joannes de Laet after original cartography by Krzysztof Arciszewski.
