Description

Finely-colored antebellum chart of state and federal constitutions, compiled by the Philadelphia-based printer Thomas H. Palmer and which appeared in Carey and Lea's A Complete Historical, Chronological, and Geographical American Atlas, printed by Palmer.

Also an educator, Palmer wrote to Thomas Jefferson in 1813 about his endeavor to create this chart, inquiring of the former president, "whether to your knowledge any other constitution has been amended besides those of the U.S. & Maryland, which I have procured." Jefferson wrote back, "that the constitution of Virginia has undergone no formal change, nor received any formal amendment since the date at which it was passed."
