Description

Lithograph of prominent San Franciscans at the Mechanics Industrial Fair by cartoonist Edward Jump. At the center, number three is the chocolate manufacturer and founder of his eponymous company Domingo Ghiradelli. On the lamppost on the right, number thirty-nine is the publisher and early promoter of aviation, Frederick Marriott. At number fifteen is the journalist, poet, and co-founder of the Bohemian Club, James F. Bowman.

Edward Jump was a French-born caricaturist who first arrived in California in 1851. A contemporary of Mark Twain, Jump became acquainted with him in San Francisco.

Rarity

Only two copies of this item have been located in institutions, one at the Bancroft Library and the other at the De Young Museum in San Francisco.

Condition Description
Mounted on backing board. Original sheet trimmed at top in a curve, following and just touching title lettering at the top. Tear at mid-left edge, entering 1" into image. Three closed tears at top. Bottom left corner of mat chipped off. Overall, image quite clean.
