Description

Cotton Mather's 17th Century New York and New England

An interesting historical map of New York and New England, showing the region at the end of the 17th Century.

The map provides a unique reconstruction of the Colonies in 1697, along with the regional Native Americans, including:

  • Plymouth Colony
  • Connecticut Colonie
  • New Albion Colonie
  • Country of Narangansset
  • Nipnak Country
  • Part of East New Jarsey

Early towns are noted, along with a few early roads, most notably the road from Medfield to Harford on the Connecticut River and from Milton to Manchester, via Providente (Providence) Rhode Island.

Martha's Vineyard is Martins Vineyard.

The cartographic content is based upon Cotton Mather's Magnalia Christi Americana: The Ecclesiastical History of New England from Its First Planting in 1620, until the Year of Our Lord 1698.  The work describes the religious development of Massachusetts, and other nearby colonies in New England from 1620 to 1698, including notes on the Salem witch trials, a complete "catalogus" of all the students who graduated from Harvard College, the story of the founding of Harvard College itself; and his assertions that Puritan slaveholders should do more to convert their slaves to Christianity.
