Description

Nice example of the panoramic view from Johannes de Vou and Romeyn De Hooghe's wall map of Rotterdam.

Romeijn de Hooghe was commissioned by the City of Rotterdam to publish a plan of the city, which he accomplished with the assistance of Johannes de Vou, for which De Hooghe was ultimately paid 2000 guilders, with De Vou only receiving 100 guilders.

The map included at the bottom this magnificent large panoramic view of the city as seen from the Maas River, filled with finely etched images of VOC and other sailing vessels, with a remarkably detailed image of the architectural details of the buildings along the Maas.

The work was first published in 1694 as an atlas, which included a large plan, an elaborate frieze with the coats of arms, 12 town views, along with this remarkable view of Rotterdam on 6 sheets.  Intended as a gift to be presented by the city leaders to important visitors, the work was not originally available for sale in Rotterdam.

The view was extended with an extra panel in 1773: the plate at the left end was replaced with a broader one, and an extension plate was added to the right end, both reflecting the expansion of the city since 1694.

The present example would seem to only have the extension at the right, but not the left, suggesting it is either a mixed state or perhaps a proof state.
