Description

Scarce map of the United States, prepared under the direction of the United States Quartermaster General, in 1892.

The map detail Bond-aided Railroads in Black, Free Land Grants in Green and Fifty percent Land Grant railroads in red.  The location of strategic military posts are noted with red flags.

The map was prepared as part of a report of the US Quartermaster General on the logistics and readiness of the American Military in the last decade of the 19th Century.

At the end of the 19th Century, the Quartermaster's Department, under the direction of the Secretary of War, was responsible for the materials, logistics and means for supporting the U.S. Military.  This include transporting, by land and water, troops, munitions of war, equipments, and all articles of military supplies from the place of purchase to the several armies, garrisons, posts, and recruiting places.   It also meant providing transportation for ordnance and ordnance stores issued by the United States to the militia of the several States and Territories

Rarity

The map is scarce. This is the first example we have offered.
