First state of the rare Zenoi-Bertelli map of Italy published in Venice in 1567
Zenoi's map drawn from the cartography of Giacomo Gastaldi's map of 1561, with with significant embellishments in the Mediterranean, Gulf of Venice and Adriatic Sea. The dedicatory cartouche is surmounted by two allegorical figures holding the coat of arms of the Lippomano family, with a effusive dedication to Abbot Andrea Lippomani, Prior of the Convent of the Teutonic Knights at Holy Trinity.
Curiously, while the map is configured as a typical map of Italy, the title, "Il Golfo Di Venetia," gives a Venetian-centric view of the map's coverage.
States of the Map
This is the first state of the map, with the date of 1567. In the second edition, the date is changed to 1569.
There exist later states, including two states (1615 and later) for which the copper plate has been completely retouched and with numerous additions in the orography in the Western Alps, Apennines and Balkans.
Rarity
All states of the map are quite rare.
We note 1 example of the first state of the map offered for sale at Christies Rome (June 2006, Lot 257 €19,200 ($24,422))
