Description

Fine original antique French-language map of Canada showing the country divided into provinces.

The map is highly detailed and shows railroads, topography, cities, hydrography, and more. Significant parts of the continental interior only have dashed lines in their hydrography, showing the continuing state of surveying present in the country. the Native American tribes are indicated. Detail extends into the northern United States.

The map includes a late-18th-century configuration of the North-West Territories. Assiniboia appears below Saskatchewan, and Athabasca appears above Alberta. The configuration with Assiniboia would disappear in 1905 with the formation of the Province of Saskatchewan.

The title "Puissance du Canada" literally translates to "Strength of Canada" and was the French equivalent of "Dominion of Canada." It was favored by Canadian nationalists over the term dominion as, while it still signified that Canada was a colony of sorts, it suggested a greater independence to the country.
