Description

Includes Hadrian's Wall

Fine old color example of Cornelis Danckert's map of England and Wales, published in Amsterdam.

The map includes early roads, rivers, lakes, mountain towns and other details.  Counties are also noted.

The map also depicts Hadrian's Wall, which was built by the Roman Empire in the 2nd century AD as a defense against invasions from the north. The wall was located in northern England and ran for 73 miles  from the River Tyne near the North Sea to the Solway Firth on the Irish Sea. It was made of stone and stood up to 15 feet tall. In the 17th century, the wall was no longer in use as a military defense, but it remained a significant cultural and historical landmark.
