Dallas-Printed Broadsheet Promoting Emigration to Texas.
Attractive illustrated Texas broadsheet promoting settlement in "Brownwood Country," including "Home Creek Valley" and "Clear Creek Valley". The broadsheet was printed in Dallas by John F. Worley in 1891.
The broadsheet begins with a general promotion of the state, including a table illustrating its enormous growth during the 1870s and '80s. This introduction was clearly aimed at possible settlers from outside the state.
Most of the sheet is given over to land promotion in the so-called "Brownwood Country". That term is a byword for Coleman County. The headquarters of the land sales was in Santa Anna, Texas, on the western edge of the Texas Hill Country.
The broadsheet promotes a land auction in early June 1891, establishing the publication date.
The sheet was printed by John F. Worley, "Stationer and Printer" of Dallas, Texas. The front illustration is signed "M.N. Co." and one of the illustrations on the verso is signed "Lampe & Lambrecht". The latter specialized in this kind of commercial wood engraving from the late 1880s to the early 1890s.
Rarity
We find one example in the Library of Congress. Another example is held at the University of Texas, Austin.
