Description

Rare satirical etching by Giuseppe Maria Mitelli, celebrating the defese of Vienna against the attacking forces of the Ottoman Empire.

The image shows the Grand Turk, as he is carried away dead on a bier to Asia, leaving behind Vienna and Europe 1687.

Mitelli produced a number of similar satirical images which lampooned the Ottoman Turks and their allies.  These include an image of enraged Imre Thököly (Hungarian nobleman and Ottoman sympathizer) in oriental garb behind bars and a image mocking the assistance that foreign Doctors provide to a dying Ottoman Sultan (including the sultan's hat under a commode, and a torn Koran).
