Description

Rare and large Coast Survey chart of the town of Rockland, Maine, focusing on navigation in the harbor.

The map, as is common with Coast Survey maps, is finely detailed. On land, individual structures are shown in black, roads are indicated, and topography is shown. At sea, soundings and other features of navigational use appear. In the lower left are several statistical facts about the region including the coordinates, the average tides, and the soundings.

Rockland was undergoing a pivotal change in its history during this period. The Knox and Lincoln Railroad arrived in 1871, which added tourism to the more traditional shipbuilding industries of the city. Inns and hotels were built and a number of famous hotels were built. This railroad appears to be indicated in the lower left of the map.
