Description

Fine example of Rudolf Jakob Bollin's plan of Bern and environs, published in Bern by Johann Jakob Burgdorfer.

The map is centered on the course of the Aar River, as it flows from south to north through the city.  The City's plan and fortifications are shown, as are outlying communities, roads, and other details.

The map shows the area shortly after the withdrawal of the French Troops who occupied by French troops in 1798 during the French Revolutionary Wars, when Bern was stripped of parts of its territories. The Bernese Oberland was stripped away to become the Canton of Oberland.  It was not until the Act of Mediation, two years later, with the abolition of the Helvetic Republic and the partial restoration of the ancient régime, that the two cantons were reunited.
