Description

Evocative, classic World War II-era poster entreating citizens of the U.S. to buy war bonds in preparation for entry into World War II.

The poster features a hand dropping a 1941 Liberty coin (similar to a Liberty Dime, but not) into a United States-shaped metal coin bank.

The art for the poster was done by Henry Billings (1901-1985), who signed the poster in print just to the right of the coin bank, for the U.S. Government Printing Office.

The map appears in a rare variant where "DEFENSE" has been emphatically crossed out and "WAR" appears above it in big red block letters (1941: J-414728. Poster No. 4A.) This was done after Pearl Harbor, to capitalize on the change in national attitude after the attack.

Provenance

Deaccessioned from the Valentine Museum.
