Description

A beautiful chromolithograph of a sunset (or sunrise) near Rio de Janeiro by German artist Eduard Hildebrandt (1818-68). This view captures the vibrant colors and stunning landscapes of the area.

One of a suite of approximately 34 lovely chromolithographed plates of scenes apparently made while on a circumnavigation, mounted to the publisher's board.

Hildebrandt was already a finely regarded artist by 1838. He moved to Paris in 1842 to continue his work. Inspired by Humboldt, in 1864-1865, Hildebrandt traveled around the world, visiting the Middle East, India, Singapore, Siam, Macao, Hong Kong, the Philippines, Japan, and the United States. He created watercolors along the way, many of which were translated into chromolithographs and published around 1864 by R. Wagner in Berlin.

The original watercolors were exhibited in London in 1866 and at an exhibition at Crystal Palace in 1868, creating a series of paintings that would be converted to chromolithography after his death in 1868.
