The Earliest Printed Plan of Fort Niagara

Fort Niagara was built by the French to control of access between the Niagara River and Lake Ontario.
During the French and Indian War, the fort was captured by the British in July 1759, following the 19 day siege referred to as the Battle of Fort Niagara. Doubly disasterous, a French relief force sent to relieve the besieged French forces at Fort Niagara were ambushed at the Battle of La Belle-Famille. The French commander, Pierre Pouchot, surrendered to Sir William Johnson, commanding officer of the New York Militia.
The capture of Fort Niagara was an important win for the British as the fort was a critical supply line between the province of Canada and Ohio Country.
