Description

Extremely rare and unusual late-19th-century atlas of large-scale Gaylord Watson maps of the regions of the United States, published by Perry & Spaulding in Boston in 1875.

Watson's book is unusual as far as 19th-century American atlases go; it essentially consists of a large map of New England in two sheets, a map of the eastern United States in four sheets (seemingly adapted from his 1874 Watson's New Business Man's County & Rail Road Map of the United States and Dominion of Canada), and a large folding map of what we would today call the Transmississippi West.

The atlas is very consistent with Watson's output of large, vibrantly-colored, and scarce maps of American subjects.

Rarity

OCLC locates copies of related (though, based on collations, apparently not identical) atlases at Harvard, Johns Hopkins, Northwestern, and the Osher Map Library. There is a digitized example in the Rumsey Collection 2841.

Note, this atlas is not to be confused with Watson's 1875 New Commercial County and Railroad Atlas of the United States and Territories, and British Provinces. That atlas has a more standard configuration with double-page maps of individual states and territories.
