Fine and scarce map and traveler's guide of the United States, published by the eminent Philadelphia cartographer H. S. Tanner in 1837 and describing the young nation in great detail.

The map shows the United States to Florida and Louisiana to Missouri. Around the edges are insets of dozens of localities: New York, Philadelphia, Charleston, Washington, D.C., Richmond, New York, Providence, Boston, New Orleans, Louisville, Cincinnati, Pittsburg, Pottsville, the Hudson River, Montreal, Albany, Niagara, and Quebec.

On the map itself, distances are marked along all of the major roads. Early railroads are indicated less than a decade after their establishment in the United States. The detail is impressive.

Text and Plates

The map accompanies a lengthy traveler's guide to the United States. The text lists many towns, cities, rivers, and more throughout. Most importantly, the text includes several attractive small plates and maps.

The book opens with a frontispiece of Niagara Falls. Small double-page engraved maps show major American cities. Views show Breed's Hill, West Point, Brandywine Lighthouse, and many other natural landmarks and monuments.
