Description
Incomplete example of William F. Sawsey's decorative bird's-eye view of San Francisco, lithographed by the great 19th-century California lithographer Edward Bosqui.
This schematized view to the west shows six ships in the harbor and recreates the simple street patterns of early San San Francisco. Clay, Kearney [sic], Washington and Montgomery Streets are identified. The buildings are keyed by thirty-five numbers to a printed list below the illustration with letter references to ships such as the USS Portsmouth. Two arrows are shown for the "Trail to Presidio" and "Trail to Mission Dolores".
Condition Description
Remargined and restored, with evidence of old tears and minor loss. Upper and right neatline reinstated in facsimile, with minor reinstatement of image along right edge. Approximately 3-4" trimmed from the top of the image. Small chips and repaired tears throughout image throughout.
