Description

Highly-unusual composite of four German air navigation maps showing the region split between eastern Hungary, eastern Slovakia, northern Romania, and western Ukraine

.Each of the maps appears to be used for air navigation, evidenced by a note in the upper left that reads Fliegerkarte and the use of a grid reference primarily associated with navigational charts. However, each of the maps is of a slightly different style, with varying focuses on topography, restricted zones, population centers, and other features.

The four maps may have been chosen for these specific focuses. The northern maps are more focused on topography, which would have been useful in this highly mountainous region. The southern regions show population centers more clearly, which would have been useful for the vicinity of Budapest.

Provenance

This map was purchased in a group of Hungarian Second World War air navigational material that included annotated flight charts of Europe with a specific focus on Hungary and Ukraine.
