Description

Rare double Hemipshere map of the World, published in Pars for the Spanish language market and dedicated to the Marques de Gouvea.

The map note that it was available for sale in 5 different cities in Spain, with a list of the sellers at the bottom left.

Shows Nueva Hollanda (Australia), Sea of the West (Lago Hermoso!), along with Lago Velasco, lands described by the Moscovites, lands near the Arctic Circle discovered by Admiral de Fuente, and other interesting details.

South of Tierra del Fuego, the passage supposedly discovered by Drake in 1578 is shown. The west coast of New Zealand is shown, including Bahya de S. Phelipe and Cabo Maria. Several of the islands in the Pacific includes dates of discovery.

The map is surrounded by additional diagrams and a superb rococo cartouche. North and South polar projections are included in the cusps, and diagrams at top depict the solar system based on Ptolemy, Copernicus, Brahe and one that merges all three concepts. At bottom left is an illustration and explanation of Descartes' theory of vortices.

The original map provides credits to Hasius, a German cartographer, for the projections, and to De L'Isle. There are a number of subtle differences in the maps and we believe that this map is likely an English copy of the French original, which is known in only a single example.

Rariity

The map is very rare, with examples recorded in the National Library of Portugal and the Technische Universitiat Bergakademie in Germany.
