The Largest Sea Chart of the Gulf Coast Published During the Civil War

Highly detailed sea chart of the Gulf Coast, extending from Matagorda Bay in Texas to Apalachee Bay, published in New York by E. & G.W. Blunt.

Printed on 2 large sheets, Blunt's sea chart was the best map of the Gulf Coast available to mariners in the 1850s.

The chart includes a large inset map of the area around Mobile Bay and a second inset showing a continuation of the Texas Coastline. The following authorities are listed for this chart:

  • Major J.D. Graham
  • Commodore Edwin Ward Moore of the (Republic of) Texas Navy
  • JD Boylan

The charts are improved the the 1850s, but also include a large pastedown over the area centered on Isle Dernieres in Louisiana.

Blunt was the leading American chart maker during much of the 19th Century.

Rarity

This pair of charts was published for several decades, but today, it is a relatively rare survival.

This is the second example we have offered in the past 25 years (2022), with the prior set corrected to circa 1864.

Condition Description
Two unjoined linen backed charts. Soiled and mis-creased, with some abrasions and minor loss.

[ St. Augustine, Florida ] Pagus Hispanorum in Florida

Good example of Ogilby's important early view of St. Augustine. St. Augustine was founded in 1565 by Pedro Menendez, as a base of operations for protection of the Spanish trade routes to its American colonies in the West Indies. Menendez named the settlement St. Augustine, after the day of the festival of San Augustine. The first known plan of the city was sketched by Baptista Boazio, an artist who traveled with Sir Francis Drake, in 1586, at which time Drake raided St. Augustine. This view was originally drawn from Gerrit van Schagen's work and depicts a fictionalized view of the town with mountains and other fanciful embellishments. From John Ogilby's seminal atlas America: Being the Latest, and Most Accurate Description of the New World, published in London in 1671. Ogilby's work is an English translation of Arnoldus Montanus' Die Nieuwe en onbekende Weereld…, published in Amsterdam, although greatly expanded in some instances and with new maps and views. Minor soiling at centerfold and a bit of toning, but a still a nice example.
