Description
Following Athanasius Kircher's 1665 mapping ("Hydrophylacium Africae precipuum..."), Heinrich Scherer presents the Nile circulating through Lake Zaire and Lake Bed (an overly southwestern Lake Tana). The Montes Lunae, or Mountains of the Moon, are pictured south of Lake Zaire.
The Monoemugi Empire (or Unyamwezi) occupies the interior of much of present-day Tanzania. Mombasa appears on the map, as does Pemba Island, Zanzibar, Mozambique, Mauritius, and Accra in Ghana. Madagascar is labeled "S. Laventii" after Laurence Almeide and Reunion "Borbonia" for the House of Bourbon. The city of Biafra is placed on the Rio dos Camerones.
