Rare, Massachusetts-published map of the Holy Land, showing Palestine, Syria, and extending well into the Arabian Desert.
The map purports to show the region as it was during the period described in Kings. Jerusalem is shown, as well as other ancient cities including Nob, Mizpeh, and others. The Dead Sea and the Jordan River are shown. Various tribes are shown, including the Moabites and the Ammonites.
The engraver is the New Yorker Joseph L. Lewis (1791?-1877), active 1812-1848; he engraved a handful of maps early on but thereafter focussed on engraving seals, stationery etc., as well as household metal work - knockers, door plates, house numbers, etc.
Condition Description
Minor soiling. Lower-right margin extended where previously cut to platemark for binding. Short repaired tab tear from the right edge.
