In the early hours of  April 18, 1906, a magnitude of 7.9 earthquake rocked San Francisco, setting in motion several days of chaos and fires. The 1906 earthquake remains the deadliest natural disaster in California’s history, with an estimate of over 3,000 people killed and over 80% of the city destroyed (some 25,000 buildings on 490 city blocks).
