Tourism in Nepal started in the early 1950s,although it wasn't until1955 that the government issued the first official tourist visas.

In the mid 1960s, the profile of Nepal tourism changed. The elderly elite continued to come to Kathmandu for brief stays in luxury hotels, but in 1965 a surge of youthful, budget-class travellers emerged.  After 1965 around two-thirds of western visitors in Nepal were less than 40 years old and in some years almost half the arrivals were between 16 and 30, ushering in the "hippie era" and the emergence of the "Road to Kathmandu."
