Description
Report and map of a survey undertaken in 1850-51 under Captain Joshua Barney of the United States Topographical Corps of Engineers, who was noted for his excellent railroad maps. The report covers topography, quality of the soil, waterways, swamps, resources, grading, and other features that favor one possible route over others.
The map, lithographed by C.B. Graham, shows the route from St. Louis to a point near Little Rock on the Arkansas River, which would eventually become the Mississippi, Ouachita, and Red River Railroad, the first incorporated railroad in Arkansas. The route follows modern-day U.S. Highway 67.
