Description

Fine image of Hoover Dam, (at the time called Boulder Dam) in the Black Canyon of the Colorado River.

Construction on the dam began in 1931 and was completed in 1935.  The dam became an immediate tourist attraction in the west.

President Franklin Roosevelt proclaimied the dam "a twentieth-century marvel" which transformed the Colorado River "into a great national possession."   Originally called Hoover Dam, Hoover's role in the Great Depression resulted in a brief name change, but the name was ultimately restored to Hoover Dam in 1947.
