Description

Scarce German army-issued map of the region around the city of Sulaimaniya, near the present-day Iraqi-Irani border.

The map shows the region in a high level of detail, with topography, roads, rivers, and more all indicated. The map is particularly interesting for its German focus on the region. There were two main reasons why the German army was interested in this area: firstly, they hoped to reach India overland by way of Iraq, and, secondly, they hoped to foment increased insurrection against the German army during the Anglo-Iraqi War.

A warning in red in the upper right states that the map is far from accurate away from the main roads. The map is based on a quarter-inch map from the English Survey of India.
