Description

Fine George IV Table Globe.

Rare and decorative 12-inch globe produced in 1828 by the noted London globemaker Thomas Marriott Bardin.

The globe preserves a fine depiction of the world as it was during the beginning of the 19th century. The United States extends westwards to the Pacific, with uncertainty as to the answering of the Oregon Question. The Southwest and Texas are under Mexican control. The northern Pacific shows Cook's discoveries as well as later explorations, as advertised in the title.

The palette used by Bardin in coloring this globe is particularly attractive. The full wash color applied to the oceans, combined with the subtle greens, beiges, and yellows showing political boundaries, contribute to the attractive, muted tones of the object.

This globe was produced by Thomas Marriott Bardin following his inheritance of his family's globe-making business from his father, William Bardin.

Condition Description

12-inch table globe composed of twelve printed and original hand-colored globe gores with two polar calottes. Encompassed by brass meridian ring and later oak furniture. Horizon ring supplied in facsimile. Restored cracking of gores with several small areas (less than 1 inch) reinstated in facsimile, and small reinstated loss in India without facsimile. Some soiling, as imaged. Good to VG.
